What was the sin of those who built the Tower of Babel?

Go to, let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth.

Genesis 11:4.

Most people will say, “They were prideful ...” or “They tried to reach God,” or something similar. After the flood, God instructed Noah to “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth.” Gen 9:1 God wanted the descendants of Noah to inhabit the whole earth. But the people at the time had another idea. The people clearly did not want to scatter. They wanted to pool their resources and make a name for themselves in the Valley of Shinar. Seeing this, God confused their language, setting back their technological advances and causing them to be “... dispersed over the face of the earth ...” (verse 8).

Why is this important? One again, at Pentecost, when the Holy Ghost came upon the believers they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. (Acts 2:4-6)

And here is the exciting part. What did God tell the believers to do after the Holy Spirit had come upon them? And he said unto them, Go into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. (Mark 16:15) “... But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the uttermost part of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)

After the great flood, the people were instructed to populate the whole earth. They disobeyed, and God confused their languages causing them to scatter. After Pentecost, the believers were told to go into all the world with the message of salvation. And the first sign was the languages being unconfused!
